EMDR Intensives

What is an EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR intensive is a specialized therapeutic approach that is more streamlined than weekly therapy sessions.

Unlike the latter, EMDR intensives involve a period of concentrated EMDR therapy sessions, usually spanning several consecutive days or a compressed timeframe. This format offers distinct advantages, such as accelerated progress, allowing clients to make significant strides in a shorter duration, which proves particularly beneficial for individuals seeking to more quickly process a traumatic event or memory, or those dealing with acute symptoms.

The intensive nature provides an immersive experience, enabling clients to delve deeply into the therapeutic process with less distractions. This focused approach enhances emotional processing and healing, allowing individuals to work through acute, complex or deeply-rooted issues more in a more streamlined way than with week-to-week sessions.

The continuity of care inherent in intensive programs, involving multiple sessions within a short timeframe, sustains momentum in the therapeutic process, and the heightened motivation and commitment required for intensive participation contribute to overall treatment success.

Is an EMDR intensive right for me?

EMDR intensives can be a suitable choice for individuals who have been in therapy before, and are prepared to undergo concentrated trauma-focused work over a brief timeframe. These intensives cater to clients aged 15 and older.

Consider the following criteria to determine if you could be a suitable candidate for an EMDR Intensive:

  • I have previous experience with therapy.

  • I have time constraints that make intensive therapy more convenient/supportive.

  • I have some effective coping mechanisms.

  • I aim to target certain issues with a more concentrated approach and have a preference for intensive work.

  • I am adept at self-care practices.

  • I experience minimal dissociation.

  • I’ve been contemplating arranging sessions on a weekly basis, but the prospect of adhering to a weekly schedule seems more burdensome than beneficial.
